Jersey - fine knitted fabric
Jersey fabric takes its name from the largest Channel Island of the same name in the English Channel. The islands, which are subject to the British Crown, used to be an important exporter of woven fabrics. Due to its classic processing into knitted fabric, knitted or woven jersey fabric is always stretchy. The addition of elastane, as is common in fashion today, also makes jersey elastic and helps it to retain its shape. Jersey is always a blended textile made from different fibres. In most cases, jersey consists of a large proportion of viscose or cotton with a smaller proportion of elastane. In rarer cases, jersey is also made from wool blend fibres or silk. What all jersey variants have in common is the high level of comfort and the relative durability of the fabric.
