A concise dress code for
In the olden days there
used to be a clear and strict dress code for many or even most of the jobs;
this has generally changed today in the 21st century. Individuality
is the word and stiff dress codes are only rare in the modern world of
business. However, there is a small number of general rules for your office wardrobe, which are still valid, in
order to make the best fashion impression with your boss and colleagues. The non-colour
white has become very trendy again. White dresses are not the exclusive
choices for weddings or summer parties anymore, but can be worn every day at
work without any problem. Your rule of thumb here: Remember to wear something
that doesn’t shine through from underneath! Beige or skin-coloured dessous are
a must; black is absolutely impossible underneath white office dresses. Another
summer topic is sleeveless clothing. Experts tell us to keep away from tank
tops, tops with spaghetti straps or bandeau tops. In general, you should wear a
dress with little sleeves or a sleeveless dress with a cardigan on top.
Colours, flowers, prints –
the new generation of office dresses.
In the olden days, women
used to wear more subdued colours like brown, dark blue or black. But today, women
can let their true colours shine through when they go to the office. Glaring
red dresses or green long tunics are allowed. But always remember to keep the balance when wearing such
eye-catching office dresses, by combining them with something discreet,
e.g. accessories, a blazer or leggings in more reserved colours. Prints with
trendy geometrical shapes, little flower patterns or ethno style dresses
are also okay, provided you are following the same rule. Generally, you should
avoid showing too much skin by all means, like with a deep neckline, low-rise
trousers, see-through blouses (except with a top underneath) or extra-short
skirts (no shorter than one hand’s width above the knees); if you follow these
rules, then nothing can go wrong fashion-wise at the office.
