The kaftan - a garment with tradition

What is known today as a caftan dress is actually one of the most traditional items of clothing known to mankind. Both men and women have always worn kaftans, especially in African and Middle Eastern countries. "A kaftan is a long, loose, straight-cut garment made of lightweight fabric with long, wide sleeves, which not only protects against the sun, but also has a cooling and airy effect." The caftan originated in the Middle East and has a long tradition in Arabic and Oriental culture. Even today, men on the Arabian Peninsula, in the Arab countries of the Mediterranean region and in North Africa traditionally wear caftans. Women there are also often dressed in a version of the kaftan dress. The traditional kaftan design often includes richly decorated embroidery, splendid patterns and vibrant colours. Over time, however, the kaftan has evolved and now offers a wide range of modern variations.
