From Newport to Coachella Valley – a concise festival-history.
Even if it’s hard to believe: festival-culture is no older than 100 years. – Sure, concerts with classical or popular music in ballrooms or halls had existed a lot earlier, but an event featuring several bands for a couple of days, called an open-air festival, has only been around for a little more than 50 years.
Festival culture has evolved from the USA; the first big festival is known to be Newport Folk Festival in Rhode Island in 1959. This kind of concert spread out in America rapidly. But the real highlight was ten year later in Bethel: the three-day-festival Woodstock with more than 500,000 people in attendance. The mother of all festivals is world-famous today and is the epitome of all open-air concerts.
And also in Germany, going to a festival, especially in summer, is a must for every music fan. There are almost 400 festivals in Germany every year, ranging from the mayor open-air concerts with several different stages to little ones for special interests, like Japanese music or jazz from the Swing era.

But no matter if you’re attending the favourite festival of the celebrities, Coachella, if you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere at the Sziget Festival in Budapest or if you’ve got the swing at the Copenhagen Jazz Festival, what you need is the right festival outfit!
Festival essentials – that’s hot!
The most important thing about festival fashion: it has to be functional. After all, you will chill out on blankets, dance in mosh pits or eat some finger food in between, when you spend your festival-days by a lake, on a field or in a forest. The diva inside you may take a little break at a festival, because high heels and similar accessories will definitely stay in your wardrobe when you are going to an open-air concert. Instead, wellingtons, ballerina slippers and light sandals will be your perfect companions. But that doesn’t mean you can’t be très chic! Dress code: hippie-esque and natural.
Casually falling tassels, braided hair, leather bags, romantic maxi dresses and denim pieces are part of every festival-outfit. And don’t you forget your rain cape and dry shampoo! And especially in the last couple of years flowers in the hair of festival beauties have become indispensable – but the real ones please! Fake flowers often look rather cheap.
